Fatal Encounter: ICE’s Deadly Pursuit of the Undocumented
The recent killings of Joan Sebastian Guerrero and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have sparked outrage and renewed fear among immigrant communities nationwide. As a Latina, I’m not just reporting on these incidents – I’m reliving my family’s trauma.
Images of Guerrero’s lifeless body being pulled from his car by ICE agents are etched in my mind. His story is eerily familiar: like Guerrero, my father had worked hard to obtain a green card, only to live with the constant fear of deportation.
The facts of these cases are disturbing. ICE agents were involved in both shootings, and their use of force has been widely criticized. The agency’s claims that they were pursuing “worst of the worst” criminals ring hollow when faced with evidence of unnecessary violence.
The Fear Factor
Fear is a powerful tool that ICE has mastered in its pursuit of immigrants. By spreading propaganda and misinformation, the agency creates an atmosphere of anxiety among vulnerable populations. This approach has devastating consequences: families like mine live with constant worry about being torn apart.
My father’s experience is a prime example. Despite having a green card, he was afraid to leave his home for fear of being apprehended by ICE. He carried a folder full of documentation and awards to prove his humanity – a desperate attempt to humanize himself in the eyes of authorities.
The Legacy of Trauma
The trauma inflicted on immigrant families is not new. My family’s experiences during the 1990s are a stark reminder of the long-term effects of living under constant threat. We were forced to flee our home in Bogotá after my father was kidnapped by FARC guerrillas. Memories of those years – threatening phone calls, fear of being targeted – still linger.
ICE’s actions perpetuate a cycle of trauma that affects entire communities. By creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety, ICE undermines the very fabric of society.
The Unmarked Vehicle
The fact that ICE agents were driving unmarked vehicles in both incidents raises serious questions about accountability and transparency. If these agents are pursuing “worst of the worst” criminals, why do they feel the need to conceal their identities?
This lack of transparency is a hallmark of an agency that operates outside the bounds of accountability. By failing to wear identifying badges or use marked vehicles, ICE agents send a clear message: they believe themselves above the law.
The Human Cost
The human cost of these incidents cannot be overstated. Families like Guerrero’s and Salgado’s are left to pick up the pieces after their loved ones are taken from them in senseless violence. My own family has lived through similar ordeals, and I can only imagine the pain and trauma that these families must endure.
As we demand answers about these incidents, it’s essential to remember that ICE’s actions are part of a larger pattern of persecution. We cannot afford to be complacent in the face of such atrocities; instead, we must continue to speak out against systemic racism and xenophobia that underpins ICE’s policies.
The drumbeat of fear is getting louder, but we must resist it with all our might. By standing together as a community, we can create a world where families like mine are not forced to live in constant terror of being torn apart by institutions designed to protect us.

The outrage over ICE's deadly pursuit of undocumented immigrants is long overdue. What's often overlooked, however, is the role that US laws and policies play in perpetuating this cycle of violence. While ICE may be wielding a heavy hand, they're ultimately enforcing a system designed to intimidate and marginalize vulnerable populations. The fact remains that many undocumented individuals are already living with a valid work permit or have committed minor infractions, yet are still being treated as felons. We need to confront the flawed framework that enables this kind of abuse of power.

One perspective this article doesn't fully explore is how ICE's deadly pursuit of undocumented immigrants intersects with mental health and trauma. The long-term effects of living under constant threat can be catastrophic for families, particularly those with a history of violence like the one my family experienced. Research has shown that exposure to traumatic events can have lasting impacts on mental health, including anxiety disorders, depression, and PTSD. It's crucial to consider these consequences in our discussion about ICE's actions and how we can support immigrant communities.

The article highlights the inexcusable violence employed by ICE agents, but we must also examine the structural flaws that enable such abuses of power. The immigration system's Byzantine complexity and lack of clear guidelines create a perfect storm for discretionary enforcement and racial profiling. To truly address these issues, policymakers must re-evaluate our nation's asylum procedures and develop transparent, evidence-based protocols for ICE operations. Anything less perpetuates a culture of impunity that only exacerbates the trauma inflicted on immigrant communities.
