Yemen’s Fragile Truce Crumbles Amid Rising Tensions

The recent military flare-up between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen is a stark reminder that the relative calm in the war-torn country has been short-lived. Yemen’s humanitarian situation remains dire. Despite growing tensions, some believe that a return to full-scale war can be avoided. Sherwan Hindreen Ali, Middle East Research Manager at ACLED, points out that “The Houthis have left some room for de-escalation,” noting that at least some ships are exempt from the Houthi blockade. However, this optimism is tempered by the realization that the conflict has been ongoing for years with little progress towards a lasting resolution.

Saudi Arabia’s recent announcement of its intention to establish a multinational defense maritime coalition raises concerns about implications for Yemen’s sovereignty. Will this move be seen as an attempt to assert control over key shipping routes or merely a necessary measure to protect its interests in the region?

The US and Israel continue to engage in military action against Iran, leaving unclear how Yemen fits into this broader picture.
